A Lot of Really Good Music

September 3, 2014 danny meyer

#ThisIsAmazing No.3: Patrick Lee

Patrick Lee. I don't know where to start...

Patrick Lee has released 43 records. 43 albums of original music. Forty-three. 43 records since the year 2000. What!? And it's really good music. Patrick Lee makes some of my favorite music on the planet.

This is Patrick Lee's Website.
Check out Patrick Lee's music. It's serious.

Here are some fun facts and figures to give you some perspective.

Kanye West, 8 records since 2004
U2, 12 records since 1980
The Beatles, 13 records 1963 - 1970
Squarepusher 15 records since 1996
Patrick Lee 43 records since 2000
R. Stevie Moore, over 400 records since 1968.

Ok. Let's all go listen to R. Stevie Moore, becausewow.

And then, start making your way through Patrick Lee's beautiful discography. You can start with this song called Forest Snowshoes. Video by the one and only John Grigsby.

In my community of musicians, Patrick has been one of the musicians setting the standard for years. A hell of a pianist and a ridiculous producer, both a composer and an improviser, a great guy and a smart person, Patrick is one of the musicians and people we all look to for inspiration.

Patricks most recent record is called Limberlost. Here's a great teaser video featuring a very cute person.

Check out this record and all the rest of them. I've been listening to Patrick Lee for years. It's a great thing to do.

In Our Search For Peace Within Ourselves

August 30, 2014 danny meyer

#ThisIsAmazing No. 2: Greg Harris

"The process of creating this music has helped us in our search for peace within ourselves. Our hope is that this creation can become a means of guiding others to find that same peace within. Sharing what we create becomes a way of collaboratively evolving as a community—teaching, hearing, inspiring each other. There is a delicate balance between independence and cooperative living." - Greg Harris

Greg Harris is amazing. He has been a pillar of the Colorado music scene for as long as I can remember. He is loved and respected in our community - I think every musician playing jazz in Colorado knows Greg Harris. An amazing multi-instrumentalist, an outstanding composer and an incredible sideman, Greg has been involved in many of the most interesting projects happening in the Colorado music scene. Contemporary Jazz, Bluegrass, Hip Hop, R&B, World Music, Rock Music...all of it...everything.

Go see Greg play! The Greg Harris Vibe Quintet, Future Jazz Project, Pete Wernicks' Flexigrass, The New World Citizen Band, Supercollider and who know what else he's up to these days. It's all great.

Greg has been a powerful force of inspiration for me for years. I remember going to the Player's Club in Boulder, CO as a freshman in college to listen to Greg play with Matthew Fuller , Bill Larson, Heath Walton , and Rob Fahie. A few years later, I was driving to Denver to sit in with the Future Jazz Project with Dameion Hines , Charles Parker Mertens and Venus Cruz . These are all great musicians! Check them out.

Greg is also currently teaching at the Denver School for the Arts. Those students are so lucky. I can't imagine a better way to learn about music than to learn about music from Greg Harris. Wow!

Thank you Greg for so many years of friendship and beautiful music. Love you!

Danny
